Email a visitor when they leave (chat email)

Last updated on 25 Sep 2026

What it does

A visitor does not always stay on your site waiting for a reply. Chat email lets your reply reach them anyway, by email, once they have left the page. This is a workspace-wide setting, not a per-widget one.

Turning it on

  1. Go to Settings > Website chat.
  2. Find the Email panel.
  3. Turn on Enable.

Klovis sets up a sending address for you automatically, in the form chat@<your label>.<sending domain>. You can change the address label while setup has not finished yet, or if setup has failed. Once the address is verified, the status shows Ready.

The panel also shows how many chat emails were sent, bounced, and complained about in the last 30 days.

Missed-you emails

With Missed-you emails turned on, a visitor's reply email works like this: if you reply to a chat and the visitor has been away from the page for at least two minutes and gave an email address, that reply is sent to them by email as well as to the chat panel. It is sent at most once per conversation, until the visitor comes back to the page, at which point a later reply while they are away can email them again.

If a visitor is still on the page when you reply, no email is sent. They already see the reply in the chat panel.

Replying by email

A missed-you email invites the visitor to reply to it directly, or to click through and continue the conversation on your site. A reply to that email comes back into the same conversation in your Inbox.
